Parbold Village Festival 2004

Friday had been a wonderfully sunny day so it was disappointing to wake on Saturday 10th July and find the rain pelting down. The Parbold Village Festival it seemed would be a wash out. Obviously those involved with the floats and people organising events and manning the stalls would turn out but would anybody else? How many people would be willing to brave the cold and the wet to squelch their way around the grey, wet festival field?

Fortunately such fears proved unfounded. Community spirit prevailed and, although numbers were down, lots of people arrived to enjoy the festival. Best of all, despite the weather, the festival WAS enjoyable. The field remained firm and was pleasant to walk across and, as the photographs show, there was lots to see and do.

Once again Christ Church had been allocated a plot in the top right hand corner of the field. This year, however we operated from inside rather than outside our tent. The tent became our headquarters and our refuge from whatever the weather threw at us. We also erected two gazebos next to the tent, beneath which we set up a free lucky dip and a colouring corner.

Not suprisingly, nobody chose to linger in the rather chilly colouring corner but the free bran tubs proved a great hit. The photograph above shows a young boy feeling around inside one of the tubs, searching for hidden treasures. The photographs below show other children enjoying their dip in the tubs.

Most children couldn't believe their luck at receiving something for nothing and to add to their delight we were also handing out free 'Jesus loves you' balloons.

Our second hand games, puzzles, toys and books also proved a hit. Our aim was to sell affordable items that would enhance people's visit to the fair. All money raised would be given to charity but the main aim was to provide pleasure rather than raise large sums of money. The highest price for anything sold on the stall was therefore 50p but most items cost 20p and some were 5p or less. At the end of the day we had made £38.50, half of which has been given to Tear Fund and the other half to Betel.

The four photographs above show our view, looking out from inside our tent and the visitors view as seen from outside the tent.
